Philosophy
The idea of Tiny Traveller came about all because our family couldn’t stand the amount of food waste that came with short trips and holidays. Was it really necessary to buy a whole jar of paprika when you only needed one teaspoon? The thought of throwing the whole lot out at the end of our trip was just too much.
So, it stands to reason that sustainability, particularly of food sources, became a core premise of our philosophy.
In Australia, 7.6 million tonnes of food is lost or wasted every year. And, according to Food Bank’s 2021 Hunger Report, while 70% of this food is still perfectly edible, 1 in 6 Australian adults haven’t had enough to eat in the last year.
When we built this brand and the products that sit within it, our primary goal wasn’t to make everything biodegradable or recyclable. No. our goal was to go one better. To take things that were ordinarily single use and make them re-usable, while at the same time ensuring that you only pack the things you need, so you’re not throwing away perfectly good food at the end of your trip.
That being said, we spent hours upon hours researching product materials in an effort to come up with something that was both fit for purpose (oil and sauce packaging for airplane travel is no joke, my friend) and kind to the earth. With that in mind, here’s a little more info about our approach.
All our product packaging is designed to be used on-going and, in some cases, (hello food grade silicone pouches!) serve multiple purposes during your travels.
We could have made our outer packaging prettier (trust us, it was tempting!) but we chose to go minimal, because we figured the less that goes in the bin (even if it is the recycling one) the better.
Our mailers & mailing labels are 100% compostable in your backyard compost bin.
All our paper products, such as our postcards and care instruction cards are made from 100% post-consumer recycled paper.
And finally, in terms of our products themselves, they have been designed for you to use many times over. We truly hope you hold onto these little treasures for years and many holidays to come.
When it comes to sustainability, we don’t profess to be perfect, but we are committed to continual improvement. We are always open to hearing from our wonderful community, so if you have any feedback, please drop us a line at hello@tinytravellerco.com.au
